Honor flights and the new school year

[dropcap]H[/dropcap]udson Valley Honor Flight is a nonprofit created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. The organization transports veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit their memorials, at no cost to the veterans or their families. On Saturday, Sept. 9, three Harrison area veterans will be taking an honor flight from Westchester County Airport. Richard Bertolli and Ben DeFonce, who served in the Korean War, and Bernard Mayrsohn, who served in Word War II, will be recognized for their sacrifices and will travel to D.C. Our veterans represent the legacy of bravery made by so many young Americans. They answered the call of duty, and I’m sure I can speak for many grateful U.S. citizens in expressing my gratitude.

Residents are invited to the Westchester County Airport to cheer on veterans from the greatest generation as they depart on Hudson Valley Honor Flight’s Mission 17 on Sept. 9. All are welcome to honor our heroes and give them the send off and welcome home that many of them never received but they so rightfully deserve. The pre-flight send off will be at the 73 Tower Road hangar at 7 a.m. The welcome home reception will be at the main terminal at 8:30 p.m.

Please be advised of the following sanitation schedule change: Monday, Sept. 4 is Labor Day and town offices will be closed. During the week of Sept. 4, garbage and/or recycling normally collected on Monday will be picked up on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Garbage and/or recycling normally collected on Tuesday will be picked up on Wednesday, Sept. 6. There will be no bulk trash pickup on Sept. 6.

The Harrison public schools will be back in session soon and I would like to remind motorists to be more aware and cautious as children begin their new school year by walking to and from our area schools. I encourage parents to take the time to talk to their children about safety and the importance of crossing at a traffic signal or crosswalk as they travel back and forth to school.

As summer comes to a close, and storm season approaches, I want to bring your attention to a very important and underutilized communication option. In storms past, many Harrison residents were unable to receive my robo-calls as their phone service was interrupted during the storm. Forwarding your calls to an additional phone number (for example, your cellphone) can increase your availability (especially if you are away from the telephone that is diverting calls to another number) for an extended period of time. To forward your home phone number or landline to a cellphone, you must consult with your landline service provider to confirm that the call forwarding feature is an option. Generally, the customer can enter numerical codes, using a landline or home phone, to initiate the call forwarding option.

In closing, I would like to wish all of you a joyful Labor Day weekend. At this time, I urge you to honor our country’s men and women who contribute to our national workforce. I would especially like to recognize our teachers, municipal staff, police, firefighters and emergency personnel who dedicate themselves to improving and protecting our community. Again, I hope you and your family have a happy and safe holiday weekend.
