A strong second half propelled the Eagles to a first-round win over Harrison on the opening day of the fifth annual Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament at Harrison High School, as the Huskies wilted in the third quarter.
Eastchester, led by Jack Heffernan, was able to open up a 34-27 lead heading into the fourth and only added to that lead with a strong finish.
The Eagles would go on to drop a game to a solid Peekskill team in the finals on Dec. 18, falling to the Red Devils 67-41.

The Huskies came into the consolation game of their own tournament looking to rebound against the Tigers, but ran into a tough defensive front from White Plains, falling by 10 to the Class AA squad. Matt McLaughlin was named to the All-Tournament team.
The boys will be back in action on Dec. 22, after press time, against Westlake.
Girls Basketball

Like their counterparts on the boys’ team, Harrison’s girls also fell in the first round of their tournament last week, as Hen Hud proved deadly from beyond the arc. The Sailors hit a season-high eight 3-pointers and had five players reach double-digit point totals as they established themselves as a true threat in Class A this year.
For Harrison, Avery LaBarbera was nearly perfect from the foul line, converting 10 of 11 chances and scoring 25 points. LaBarbera nearly fueled a late Huskies’ comeback, scoring 16 points in the final quarter.

The Huskies managed a win in the consolation round of the tournament, outclassing the Rams in a 27-point rout. LaBarbera was named to the All-Tournament team. The girls will finish their 2016 schedule with a Dec. 21 game against Peekskill, after press time, and be back in action in January with a league tilt against Pelham.

The Titans will head to Cortland on Dec. 22, after press time, to compete in a tournament. Their first round opponent will be Section III’s Cazenovia.
