Some of Harrison’s valuable resources

Members of our senior community gather at the West Harrison Senior Center on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., to knit and crochet for our area’s underprivileged children. Each stitch offers warmth and encouragement to children living in tough times. A handmade item represents the outpouring of care from our community and if you are interested in joining the group, or donating yarn or knit goods for this great cause, please call Bobbie Sassano at 428-1959 or 203-520-2199.

I would like to take this time to recognize both the Boys and the Girls 10U Harrison Little League teams. After winning the District 20 Championship, the girls team advanced to the New York State Section 3 Championship, forced a final game, and lost to Montgomery. The boys team won the District 20 Championship, advanced to the New York State Section 3 Championship and lost to Haverstraw. Congratulations to the teams and their coaches for a job well done!

Once again, I would like to remind you that, with summer upon us, door-to-door solicitors are visiting local municipalities in increased numbers. If you are not one of the 1,100 Harrison households that signed up for the Do Not Knock Registry, you may visit the town’s website at harrison-ny.gov to register online, or call the town clerk’s office at 670-3030 to request a form.

I would like to direct your attention to one of Harrison’s most valuable resources. The Harrison Public Library has a valued partnership with the town/village of Harrison. It plays a vital role in enriching our community and is an asset to all our residents. Not only are we fortunate to have our library staffed with skilled professionals who make a measurable difference in the services it provides, the library offers an array of programs suitable for patrons of all ages. This summer, the library offered environmental media and natural photography mini-camps where young participants had the opportunity to learn interesting documentary and photography techniques. Students learned the importance of being environmentally conscious in a world of dwindling resources and they used media arts to demonstrate the importance of community action. It was a very valuable program and a great success. To view the documentary, visit harrisonpl.org.

Getting a passport just got easier. On Thursday, Aug. 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Westchester County Clerk Timothy Iodini’s community outreach staff will be taking photos and processing passport applications at the West Harrison Village Green on Lake Street. Routine passport applications are now taking approximately six weeks to issue. For additional information on required documents and applicable fees, please call 995-3082 or visit westchesterclerk.com.

In closing, my office has been notified by Con Ed’s Office of Government Relations regarding energy conservation. As summer temperatures are on the rise, Con Ed has provided the following energy- and cost-saving tips: turn off  air conditioners, lights and other appliances when not at home; keep air conditioner filters clean; close doors to keep cool air in and hot air out; set units to 78 degrees; and use fans when possible. For additional information, visit coned.com.
