The Harrison Children’s Center will celebrate the “Art of the Young Child” by hosting a reception on Sunday, April 30 in Town Hall from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., showcasing artistic creativity. I have always enjoyed attending this event and have been impressed with the display of talent our youngest artists possess. This year, the colorful pieces are in several different mediums and will be a welcomed addition to our exhibit spaces. The exhibits will remain in Town Hall until the end of May and I encourage all residents to visit these locations and witness what our young artists have produced.
The Interfaith Congregational Laymen’s Committee of Harrison presents “Common Values Among Our Faiths,” a panel discussion with members of the Harrison religious community, on Wednesday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harrison Public Library. The guest speakers are Ola Nosseir, Rabbi Eytan Hammerman and Father J.K. Melton. Refreshments will be provided and all are welcome. For additional information, call Lola Geiger at 939-7066.
This July 2 represents the 80th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s attempt to fly around the world. Tragically, she perished on the 31st leg of her flight. Amelia lived off Locust Avenue, in Harrison. Her house still exists on what is now Amelia Earhart Lane. A monument honoring Amelia’s solo flight across the Atlantic sits in Station Park, on Sunnyside Drive, adjacent to the Harrison municipal building and library.
Join the town/village of Harrison for a celebration of Amelia Earhart on Saturday, May 13. Harrison will pay forward its historic resident’s passion as an aviation visionary, and mentor to young women and men, with a conference exploring corporate visions and career opportunities. The conference will be followed by a tribute to Earhart at her monument in Station Park (to the left of Town Hall). The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Harrison Public Library. Immediately following, join residents at the Amelia Earhart monument where students and guests will exhibit and perform related works and speak about Earhart’s contributions. The Harrison PTAs would like to thank Harrison residents for their support in recycling their DeCicco store receipts for the benefit of Harrison students. By placing receipts in the PTA box upon exiting the store, DeCicco & Sons generously donates 1 percent of the total to the PTAs, across all six schools. Thank you, DeCicco’s, for this wonderful partnership. The funds will be used to help defray costs associated with extracurricular activities for Harrison students in need. The PTAs look forward to better serving their students with the help of the entire community.
Please make note of the following release from Westchester County Department of Public Works: WCDPW commenced work on Monday, April 24 on roadway resurfacing and related improvements on North Street from Harrison Avenue to Boston Post Road. The section, through the town/village of Harrison, is from Harrison Avenue to Theodore Fremd Avenue. The contract’s duration is 180 days. The initial phase of construction shall consist of demolition and replacement of existing curbing. Milling and paving of the existing roadway shall follow. Expect intermittent delays and/or detours during the normal workday. The contract was bid and is being administered by WCDPW, not the town/village of Harrison. All inquiries and suggestions should be forwarded to them.
The next “Lunch with the Mayor” is on Friday, April 28 and I will be at Great Wall, located at 25 Taylor Square in West Harrison. I will be at this location from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
