Celebrating summertime in Harrison

Once again, the Recreation Department hosted its annual Little League picnic and fun was had by all. Last weekend, more than 60 teams, many coaches and family members celebrated the season with hot dogs, hamburgers and festive summertime fare. It’s a greatly anticipated event and I’m glad that it was such a wonderful success.

Each year the town/village of Harrison benefits from the talent and generosity of local landscapers. I hope you all have enjoyed the beautiful plantings that adorn our public spaces, community parks and roadways. I would like to take this time to recognize Morano Landscape/Ridgeway Nurseries for their hard work in enhancing the appearance of Town Hall. I would also like to thank our town’s parks foreman, Nach Marinaccio, along with the DPW grounds personnel for providing the town with beautiful new plantings. Their efforts continue to keep Harrison looking its best.

This year, the town installed plantings to several downtown and West Harrison locations. Perennials and annuals have been planted at several downtown locations, and lovely hanging baskets adorn our main thoroughfares. The town is always looking for landscapers or individuals to sponsor gardens, and all interested should contact our DPW office at 670-3100.

Harrison’s 2017 Concert Series is approaching quickly and will provide live music featuring some of the best musical talent around. Concerts feature an assortment of pop, classic rock, covers, tributes, oldies, and more. This popular event makes hot summer nights more enjoyable, so grab your lawn chair and come enjoy a free concert at West Harrison’s Village Green and downtown’s Ma Riis Park (and street locations). For a full schedule of concert events, please call the Recreation hotline at 670-3039.

On Monday, July 3, in downtown Harrison, The Wanderers, a ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues band, will be the entertainment for the evening’s festivities, beginning at 8 p.m. Fireworks will begin promptly at 9:15 p.m. at Wilding Park on Oakland Avenue in downtown Harrison.

Future July and August events include musical entertainment by Rat Race Choir, Club Dennis (of the Dennis Nardone Show), Alive N’ Kickin’, Jackie DiMaggio, The Hindenberg, and many more. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. Please visit harrison-ny.gov for event locations and additional information. I look forward to seeing you all there.

In closing, the Harrison Girl Scouts community recently participated in the 16th annual Operation Cookie Drop at the Westchester Police Academy in Valhalla. During the annual cookie sale, scouts from all over the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Council accepted cookie donations that were sent to military personnel around the world, as well as to local VA hospitals. Scouts helped to unload and sort cookies, made cards, and decorated the boxes. They also had the chance to meet and thank servicemen and women in person. Although the grand total has not been released for this year, in 2016 the total was over 100,000 boxes and it’s expected that that number was topped this year!

The next Lunch with the Mayor is on Friday, June 23 and I will be at Powell’s Beer Garden, located at 58 Halstead Ave. in downtown Harrison. I will be at this location from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
