It’s still great to live in Harrison

Ron BelmontIt’s that time of year again and our community is eagerly awaiting the annual It’s Great to Live in Harrison/Columbus Day celebration. This year’s events are as follows: On Saturday, Oct. 8, there will be a block party and fireworks display at 7 p.m. at the West Harrison Fire Department (rain date is Sunday, Oct. 9). There will also be an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Harrison police headquarters.

On Oct. 9, the car show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the West Harrison business district. On Monday, Oct. 10, the annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. (lineup is at 9:30 a.m.) on the corner of Halstead and Thatcher avenues, with a festival to follow at Ma Riis Park across from Town Hall. I hope to see many friends and familiar faces at these wonderful events.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, the Harrison Recreation Department, the Harrison Public Library and L & J Books LLC are co-hosting the Harrison Book Club Festival. The event will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the West Harrison Senior Center and is designed to bring all Harrison book clubs together to share their practices and favorite books. Register at the library or email LandJBooks@gmail.com. Space is limited, so sign up early.

This year’s Harrison Educational Foundation fundraiser will be take place on Monday, Sept. 26th. The golf outing and dinner reception will be held at Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase, and proceeds will be used to support curriculum enrichment programs at all six Harrison schools. It’s a wonderful event and I look forward to it each year. For more information, please visit harrisoned.org/golf.

I am very happy to report that the town/village of Harrison has been named one of the safest communities in New York state. When considering a move, knowing how safe different communities are is very important. Backgroundchecks.org has compiled a list of the safest towns and cities in the state, using information based on FBI violent crime statistics and research data.

In closing, please take note that Thursday, Oct. 6 is Organ Donor Enrollment Day. Registration is now open and teams have already started registering and planning ways to sign up as many New Yorkers as possible. Just one organ donor can save up to eight lives. I encourage all who are interested in this lifesaving effort to sign up. The registration form is available at enrollmentday.org.
